About
Ayoung Yoo (b. 1987) is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting and textile art. Originally from Seoul, Korea, she is currently working in Brooklyn, NY. Her work explores the journey of life–from birth to aging and death–with a particular emphasis on breath as a symbol of existence and the passage of time. She investigates the process and history of birth, vertical connections through mothers and the horizontal relationships between individuals. Through her exploration of breath, she contemplates the delicate boundary between life and death, reflecting on the continuous flow of time.
Drawing inspiration from nature, poetry, and everyday life, Yoo creates intricate artworks using organza silk, pigment, hand stitching, and crochet. Her pieces range from large-scale works inspired by body structures and traditional clothing forms, such as the Hanbok silhouette, to smaller hanging installations. Through shifts in scale and materiality, she explores life, death, and the cyclical nature of existence.
Yoo has exhibited in Seoul, and Brooklyn, NY, participating in shows and projects such as "Access Denied" at Dock 72, Brooklyn, NY (2025) and "From" at Steuben Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2024). She currently holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing at Pratt Institute.
